Dock scene at a British Port |
English and Dutch ships taking on stores or cargo at a port. Although the port is probably imaginary, the activities relating to the loading has been closely observed. It has been set in a harbour, with the tower of a gate and a quay visible on the right, and the coast in the distance on the left. An English flagship is on the right, firing a salute and flying the ensign from the stern carved with the royal coat of arms. Beside the quay is an English flyboat that, from her shape, was probably Dutch-built. A royal yacht is arriving on the left and this has prompted the firing of the salute.

Copy of a coat of arms from stained glass, 1839. |
Salted paper print from a photogenic drawing negative by William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877). Photogenic drawing was Fox Talbot's name for the results of his first, cameraless photographic process and derived from experiments he began in 1834 but did not announce until 1839. To produce a photogenic drawing Fox Talbot placed objects or leaves on sensitized paper. The areas where sunlight fell became darkened, while covered areas remained light. This resulted in a printed out negative image. Talbot invented the negative/positive process for producing photographs between 1835 and 1839, and for this is widely recognised as the inventor of modern photography. Any number of prints could be made from the same shot by transferring the negative image on to special paper to make a positive print.

There is a crowned coat of arms to the left of the inscription. Preparations for the evacuation from 'danger zones' began in 1938. The government order for evacuation was issued on 1 September 1939. Parr Pot; Sudeley Castle Tankard: 16th century |
Parr Pot; Sudeley Castle Tankard. A globular tankard of vetro a fili latticino glass with a silver-gilt lid and foot-ring. The hallmarks are the earliest complete English set known, including all four marks, viz. the date letter for 1546-7, the leopard crowned, the lion passant and the makers mark a fleur-de-lis. The coat of arms enamelled on the lid are those of the Parr family, combining the azure bars of Parr with the sable water bougets of Ross. The influx of precious metal imports and the dispersal of church silver at the Reformation meant that more silver was available for domestic plate. Those unable to afford silver, or wishing to enhance valued pieces of glass of pottery, ordered precious metal mounts. The arms are those of Sir William, Lord Parr of Horton in Northamptonshire, uncle to Queen Catherine, whom he served as Chamberlain until his death in 1546. Recent analysis suggests that the glass is a later, perhaps 18th or 19th century replacement.

The Cockpit: 1759 |
'The Cockpit'. Cock fighting - perhaps at the Royal Cockpit, Birdcage Walk, St James's Park. Two cocks fight in a table-top circular arena surrounded by a six-inch wooden rim. Around the table are benches enclosed by a circular wooden barrier, and behind that is a bare brick wall with the royal coat of arms hanging to the left and to the right a broadsheet depiction of 'Nan Rawlings', a cock breeder known as Deptford Nan, with a cock on her knee. At the benches a melee of animated figures lay bets on the outcome and one, a defaulter on previous debts, has been suspended in a basket as punishment but still offers his watch as a stake: his shadow is cast across the fighting arena. At the table a blind man - Lord Albemarle Bertie, 2nd son of the 2nd Duke of Ancaster - takes bets while a thief filches one of his banknotes. A metal admission token is depicted over the lower border of the design.
